Rewiring Older Homes for Safety and Reliability

Wiring does not last forever. Insulation hardens and cracks, connections loosen and circuits that were designed for a few lights and a radio are now asked to power a household full of devices.

Hudson Electrical provides house rewiring across the Central Coast. Our licensed electricians inspect the existing wiring, explain what condition it is in and carry out the work in line with AS/NZS 3000.

Not every older home needs a full rewire, so we start by finding out what is actually required. Sometimes targeted repairs are enough, and sometimes replacing the wiring is the safest choice.

What’s Included in a House Rewire?

Every rewire is shaped by the size of the home, the age of the wiring and how you want to use each room. A rewiring job can include:

  • inspecting and testing the existing wiring and circuits
  • removing or isolating old, damaged or redundant cables
  • installing new cabling to power points, lights and switches
  • replacing power points, switches and light fittings
  • upgrading the switchboard and circuit protection where needed
  • installing safety switches on circuits
  • testing and checking the new work before power is restored

‍

In most cases, we agree the scope with you in advance and explain how the work will be staged. A partial rewire can address the worst areas first when a full rewire is not needed or not practical.

Signs Your Home May Need Rewiring

Old wiring can be hard to assess from the outside, and signs often show up in small ways first. Our guide on signs it is time for an electrical overhaul looks at these in more detail. You may need rewiring if:

  • your home still has rubber, cloth or lead-sheathed cabling
  • the switchboard has ceramic fuses
  • power points are warm, discoloured or crumbling
  • lights flicker or dim when appliances turn on
  • circuit breakers or safety switches trip often
  • you notice a burning smell or see scorch marks
  • there are too few power points and many power boards in use
  • the wiring has not been inspected for a long time

‍

A burning smell, sparks or hot outlets are warning signs that should not be ignored. Switch off the affected circuit if it is safe and arrange an inspection by a licensed electrician as soon as possible.

Why Older Homes Carry Extra Risk

Homes built decades ago were wired for much lighter loads than we place on them now. Our article on older homes and electrical safety on the Central Coast explains why new appliances can expose problems in ageing circuits.

Overloaded circuits are a common example. When too many devices share a circuit that was never designed for them, cables and connections can overheat, as covered in the dangers of overloaded circuits in older homes.

Rewiring replaces those weak points with cabling and protection suited to current use.

Full and Partial Rewires

A full rewire replaces most or all of the wiring in the home. It makes sense when the wiring is widely deteriorated, when the home is being renovated back to the frame or when the property has been left untouched for decades.

A partial rewire targets specific circuits or areas, such as a kitchen, a rear extension or the circuits that keep tripping. We inspect the home first and explain which approach is more sensible. For a broader look at what older homes commonly need, see electrical upgrades older homes need.

Rewiring and Renovations

Renovating is often the best time to rewire, because walls, ceilings and floors are already open. The new wiring can be planned around your layout, with power points, lighting and appliance circuits in the right places.

‍

If you are renovating, speak to us early. We can plan the electrical work alongside other trades so the programme runs smoothly and you avoid opening up finished walls later.

What to Expect During a Rewire

A rewire is a significant job, and we plan it carefully. We explain how long the power may be off, which rooms will be affected and how the work will be staged.

Walls and ceilings often need to be opened to run cables. We do our best to keep disturbance low and leave the work tidy, and you should allow for patching and painting by other trades afterwards. We test everything before power is restored.
